The three Great Living Chola Temples represent an extraordinary chapter in South Indian temple architecture.
They were built during different periods of the Chola dynasty and demonstrate the evolution of monumental temple design, sculpture and craftsmanship.
The three temples are collectively recognised by UNESCO as the Great Living Chola Temples World Heritage property.
The magnificent Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur was built during the reign of Rajaraja Chola I.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is renowned for its enormous scale, towering vimana, sculptures and sophisticated Chola architectural design.
The temple remains an active place of worship and is one of the defining monuments of Tamil architectural heritage.

Compared with the enormous Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, Airavatesvara is more compact, but it is particularly celebrated for its intricate architectural and sculptural work.
